Hue Saturation

(Article by Peter)

Hue and Saturation  (Select – Image > Adjustment > ………)

The Photoshop Hue/Saturation fields apply to the entire photo area, there are three tools that can be used in this screen, Hue, Saturation & Lightness.  The effects are applied using sliders that are operated by pointing the mouse pointer at the little slider triangle, holding down the left mouse button and dragging from left to right. There is a numeric window above each slider that presents the degrees plus or minus around a perfect colour wheel.

Preview should be ticked so your changes can be seen on your photo.

These affects will be applied to all colours within the picture if the Edit dropdown list is set to Master, if one of the following colours within the dropdown list, Reds, Yellows, Greens, Cyans, Blues, Magentas are selected only this colour range is applied.

Hue - If Master is set, shifts the colour range from (+ & -) 0 to 180˚ around a colour wheel. In affect encompassing the entire visible colour range.  If one of the above mentioned colours are selected from Edit, the (+ & -) 180˚ shift applies with that colour at the 0.

These affects will be applied to all colours within the picture if the Edit dropdown list is set to Master, if one of the following colours within the dropdown list, Reds, Yellows, Greens, Cyans, Blues, Magentas are selected only this colour range is applied.

Saturation – once a colour range has been selected on the Hue slider the intensity can be increased or reduces using this slider.

Should you wish to experiment and covert a particular photo to Black and White, have Edit set to Master and move the Saturation slider all the way to the left.  Al colours will be removed from the picture.

Lightness – Affect the brightness levels, similar to the brightness slider found in

Image > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast.  I think this command set is more versatile.

So far we have only made corrections to the colours within a picture, as I mentioned at the beginning of this document sometimes we take a really good photo but it is marred by some un-wanted object within this picture. With a little practice Photoshop has two tools that can sort out such problems.
